Pampering your feet is a great way to practice good foot hygiene, to reduce your risk of developing foot related problems.
One way to treat your feet is to give yourself a foot spa at home. Below are some tips for creating a spa experience that not only takes care of your feet, but makes them feel their best:
Clean and exfoliate:
Use warm, soapy water to bathe your feet, and don’t forget to clean between your toes. Using a foot exfoliant, gently scrub your feet to reduce rough patches of skin. Salt-based foot scrubs and pumice stones work well for this.
Once your feet are dry, apply a rich foot moisturizer to your feet, using less moisturizer in the area between your toes. If you are finding your skin tends to become dry and cracked, try applying your moisturizer before bed, and wear cotton socks overtop, to increase moisture absorption.
Clean your nail beds:
Once your feet are clean, you can use a cuticle stick to gently clean your cuticles. It is best to avoid using sharp objects when cleaning your nails. Use a wet, soapy nailbrush to brush away dirt and debris beneath your nails. After your feet are dry, you can protect your cuticles by lightly applying cuticle oil.
Trim your nails:
Using nail clippers, trim your nails straight across. Avoid trimming in a rounded-shape, as this can lead to ingrown toenails.
Apply nail polish:
First apply a base coat to protect your nails. Once dry, apply a layer of polish, and finish with a top coat.
Keep in mind it’s recommended that you do a quick foot check daily, to examine your skin, feel for pain and normal sensation, flexibility of your foot and ankle, and proper movement and balance. When looking at your skin, try to look for any corns, calluses, warts, blisters, irritations, rashes, and discoloured skin. If you do find anything abnormal during your foot check, it’s best to consult your doctor or a specialist.
